'Shigitatsu sawa' is an older reticulated Japanese maple.  This type of variegation makes the leaves produce significantly less chlorophyll in the leaf lobes with the exception of the veins of the leaf.  The lack of green pigment gives the leaf a translucent look in this variety.  It gives the tree a glowing appearance in spring.
